About the Podcast

Marginally is about supporting and encouraging people for whom writing – and all forms of creative pursuit – is part of a full life, not the only life. We’re not trying to have it all, but we do have a lot to do. We have day jobs, caring responsibilities, and other life commitments that are important to us.

Maybe we don’t aspire to write full-time. Maybe we do. Maybe we are on a longer journey to that destination, and we’d like you to join us.

We have four main themes:

  • Margins. What do we mean when we talk about the margins? This podcast is looking at people who write, who create, but who reject two ideas. First, writing for us is not a hobby. We don’t really know what a hobby is. We also reject the idea that, if you have something you’re good at or passionate about, you should burn down the world or your whole life with it.
  • Day jobs. Writing is serious for us, but it’s not everything we are or everything we do – both for financial reasons and for ourselves. We want to have real discussions about day jobs that are not just day jobs but also contribute to our sense of self. We have day jobs not just so we can get material for writing, not just for the free pens and paper, but also because they are part of who we are.
  • Motivation. But then, why write at all? What is the point? What brings us to the page, or more often to the laptop, over and over? What gets us out of the bed at 6 a.m. before work, even in the winter? (Answer: Nothing. Haha.) What tools and inspirations do we use to get us out of a rut, or get us started on mornings when we are just starting blankly at our coffee?
  • Identity. How do you give yourself permission to be a writer, when so much of writing culture demands that you are either only a writer, or not a writer at all? What if being a writer is not now – maybe not ever – your professional identity? What if you don’t intend to leave your day job?
