Episode 1: Let’s Talk About Margins

Today, we introduce the concept of margins — the first of our four themes, which we’ll be covering this month. We talk a little about how we decided to start a podcast, even though it seems like one more thing to balance, and we talk about what we’re working on, what margins mean to us and to society, what it means to be a Genius and create Art (with capital letters). We share some ground rules, and Olivia raises an important question about motives and rationalization, while Meghan talks a lot about laundry.

Maybe We all Need a Little Less Balance – Brad Stulberg

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T. S. Eliot

We also talked about the idea that Genius Artists shouldn’t have any other responsibilities in order to produce art. We didn’t mention Mason Currey’s book Daily Rituals, but it’s worth a link here.

Also, Meghan’s favorite piece about motherhood and writing right now is Maggie O’Farrell’s piece on Powell’s Books blog. Check it out if you want some excellent advice.

Marginalization – we don’t want to ignore this aspect of the margins. Get in touch – we’d love to listen.

Finally, the rules can be found on our blog here.
